viable the establishment of new industries and promoting the transfer of industrial mining establishments from other areas of the Province in search of better environmental conditions for the development of these activities, minimizing the possibilities of an ecological risk.

The Puna's gas pipeline

It is a high-pressure pipeline designed for an M.P.O. (Maximum Operating Pressure) of 100 Bar, with a Ø 6" and an extension of approximately 186 Km; it is suitable for transporting a volume of roughly 280,000 m3 /day, depending on the pressure conditions of the Atacama's gas pipeline, Chile, from which it is supplied.

The pipeline begins at the intersection of R.N. (National route) 52 and R.P. (Provincial route) 38, near the town of Susques, in the area known as Río Las Burras, where it connects with the Atacama's Gas Pipeline. From there, it runs parallel to RP38 up to the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres where it supplies the gas for the network; subsequently, it goes to its final point, Salar de Pocitos, located on RP27, at 104 Km from the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres. The gas pipeline runs at an altitude of 3,496.47 m.a.s.l., at the junction with the Atacama pipeline up to about 4,900.00 m.a.s.l., and in Alto Chorrillos, to finish at 3,699.00 m.a.s.l., in Salar Pocitos.

Objectives

The Puna's Gas Pipeline aims to strengthen the infrastructure of the Andean region of the Province of Salta, to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Puna, and to generate conditions for the development of mining activity, providing clean energy, besides creating the conditions that makes more viable the establishment of new industries and promoting the transfer… of industrial mining establishments from other areas of the Province in search of better environmental conditions for the development of these activities, minimizing the possibilities of an ecological risk.

Puna gas network

After enabling the Puna's Gas Pipeline, the construction of the gas network in the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres began with the laying of approximately 16,000 meters of pipe, with the placement of 700 home services, the execution of internal facilities, and the provision of appliances (stove and boiler, or water heater). All this to provide the inhabitants with the comfort of having natural gas, without shifting costs to the users benefited, and these being absorbed by the provincial government through REMSa S.A. In addition to the 700 homes, other institutional buildings were given those services, such as schools, police stations, the Sports Complex, the Municipality, and home-school.

The same action was carried out in the towns of Cobres, Olacapato, and Salar de Pocitos; all of these are relatively close to the route of the gas pipeline. In these towns, the gas networks were built, and the houses and institutions were provided with private facilities and devices, in order not to transfer any cost to the beneficiaries.

In the case of Tolar Grande, due to the distance to the Salar de Pocitos, it was not feasible to set up a gas network in the town; consequently, it was decided to provide internal gas installations to each home, with kitchen equipment, heater, and stove installed, and to deliver 2 L.N.G. cylinders of 10 kg each. This action was carried out in 68 homes and 12 local institutional buildings.

Fenix gas Pipeline

It is a Ø 152 mm. (6") supply pipeline, of 135 Km long and a M.P.O. of 98 Bar that starts its route in Salar de Pocitos, Los Andes Department, near the intersection of the provincial routes 27 and 17, where it interconnects with the Puna's Gas Pipeline, and extends to Salar del Hombre Muerto, Catamarca Province, where the Industrial Plant of Minera del Altiplano is located. A 60-19 bar /19-7 bar Pressure Regulating Station is installed nearby.

The gas pipeline runs at an altitude of 3,700 m.a.s.l., at the junction with the Puna's pipeline, reaching 4,200 m.a.s.l., in part of the route, and ending at 4,000 m.a.s.l., in Salar del Hombre Muerto.

The pipeline's route was defined as prioritizing safety conditions, operational criteria in maintenance, the economy in execution and maximum socio-environmental commitment.

The purpose of the Fenix Gas Pipeline is to complement and strengthen the infrastructure of the Andean region to promote the establishment of industrial enterprises or to improve the operating conditions of the existing ones; as well as to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of a region with extreme temperatures, generating a pole of development of mining activity, providing clean energy at a reasonable cost.

Anta’s gas Pipeline

It is a high-pressure pipeline designed for a 70 bar M.P.O., with diameters of 6" and 4" and a total extension of approximately 235 Km, suitable for carrying an approximate volume of 280,000 m3/day, depending on the pressure conditions of the T.G.N. (regional operator of ducts) pipeline from which it is supplied.

The pipeline extends from the intersection of R.N. (National route) 9/34 and 16, 18 km, in the north of the city of Metán, where it joins with the T.G.N. Trunk and Parallel Gas Pipelines, heading up to the town of El Quebrachal, parallel to R.N. 16 with a diameter of 6". Then, 8 km before the village of J.V. Gonazález, another branch of the gas pipeline begins, and runs parallel to R.P. (Provincial Route) 30 to Las Lajitas and continues from there parallel to R.P. 5 to the town of Coronel Mollinedo, maintaining a diameter of 6". From there it goes to the village of General Pizarro with a diameter of 4".

During its construction, a large number of rivers, streams, and canals had to be crossed. They were permanently with water; some of them were of significant magnitudes, such as Juramento River, Medina River, del Valle River, Dorado River, where horizontal directional drilling was applied as a technique.

Objectives

The purpose of the Anta's Gas Pipeline is to improve the infrastructure of the region, making available a clean and economical fuel that allows the reduction of production costs, thus benefiting agro-industrial establishments, and creating optimal conditions for new investments, either by the establishment of new industries or by the transfer of others from areas of Salta in search of better conditions for the development of activities.

Gas networks

After enabling the Anta's Pipeline, the construction of the natural gas networks in five localities began: El Galpón, Joaquín V. González, El Quebrachal, Las Lajitas, and Apolinario Saravia. In those localities, a total amount of approximately 168,000 meters of pipe were installed, and about 4,600 home services were placed. These works were entirely built and paid by the provincial government through REMSA S.A., without involving any cost to the beneficiaries.

Cobos-Lagunilla gas pipeline

It is a high-pressure gas pipeline designed for a 70 Bar M.P.O., with diameters of 8", and a total extension of approximately 22 Km.

The head or starting point is in the vicinity of Gasnor (a company of gas) Pressure Regulating Station in Cobos, and its final destination is the Lagunilla Plant of Gasnor, which was executed within the planned contractual period of 60 consecutive days.

During 2012, through REMSA S.A., the Cobos-Lagunilla Gas Pipeline was built and fitted out, with the aim of re-powering the natural gas distribution system, which would practically double the transport capacity to meet the system's increased demand and avoid the cuts that occurred in previous years during the winter season.

Puna gas pipeline

Currently, a communication system of S.O.S. posts is installed along the national and provincial routes R.P. 38, R.N. 40, R.N. 51, R.P. 27, between the stretch of Río las Burras and Salar de Pocitos, crossing the town of San Antonio de Los Cobres. This system works using the energy supplied by solar panels, pressing a button located in each post. In case of emergency, it makes a call to the operations base of the Puna pipeline, located in San Antonio de Los Cobres. These panels are often damaged by local weather, or by acts of vandalism, which make access to emergency system difficult.

For this reason, we will seek to implement a new S.O.S. system, through the installation of satellite antennas for WiFi, at heigh, so that the coverage is greater; this implies a comprehensive solution for road emergencies, and offer a service to the community by ensuring constant connection. Moreover, due to the future demands of mining companies seeking to settle, or start operations in the Puna of Salta, the construction of a gas pipeline parallel to that of the Puna and Fénix is being evaluated, in order to meet the demands of future developments.
